There are a total of 32 adult teeth, or permanent teeth, that erupt in the human mouth. Most, with the exception of wisdom teeth, will have erupted by the time a child reaches the age of 13 or so. Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, can erupt anywhere from 16 to 21 years of age. In some cases, wisdom teeth don’t come through at all, but rather stay impacted and have to be extracted. The first adult teeth to come in are typically the first molars and the central incisors, which are the two front teeth on the lower set.
The central incisors are typically the first baby teeth to erupt in infants and thus, the first baby teeth to fall out and make way for the permanent adult teeth. This typically happens around age six or seven. At the same time, as the mouth is expanding, it is making room for the first set of molar teeth, which often appear between the ages of six and eight. Most all baby teeth will be lost or loose and ready to come out by the age of 12.
Following the first molars and lower central incisors, the remaining upper central incisors, upper and lower lateral incisors, cuspids, and bicuspids will follow – typically having erupted by the age of 12 or 13. As you can tell, the ages between six or seven and 12 to 13 are formidable years for teeth, with children having both baby and adult teeth at the same time. This is why it is important for children to see a dentist regularly and for routine dental x-rays to be taken so a dentist can determine if the teeth are forming correctly.
Keeping in mind that children develop differently and this is only a guideline for when a child will have all their adult teeth, remember that some children may begin to loose teeth sooner while some may lose them later. Very premature loss of teeth, however, can pose a problem since baby teeth act as a place holder until adult teeth are fully formed and ready to erupt. Similarly, teeth that hang on too long can also cause problems with adult tooth formation.
The recommended guidelines for children to visit the dentist are to schedule their first visit within a year of the appearance of their first tooth. Some parents elect to wait until a child has reached the age of three, but all children should be seen by a dentist by the time they start school.
